Avoid Ingesting Harmful Chemicals From To-Go Containers

Styrofoam Hot FoodDo you know there is a way to avoid ingesting harmful chemicals from to-go containers? Have you ever wished that you didn’t have to use Styrofoam to-go containers when ordering take-out food?

Most restaurants choose Styrofoam because it is the least expensive option—an understandable concern. However, excellent and inexpensive alternatives are available.  If you grew up using and loving Tupperware®, you may be pleased to know that you can now buy this same type of food container made of glass or stainless steel!

Styrofoam is created using a number of dangerous chemicals like benzene and styrene which may cause a variety of physical ailments to humans, not to mention the harm it can do to the environment. To break the chain of using Styrofoam for to-go food or beverages, consider doing one or all of the following:

  1. Carry a reusable mug or thermos with you at all times.
  2. When you call in your to-go orders, tell them that you will be bringing your own food containers (and don’t forget them when you head out the door!).
  3. Talk to your favorite restaurant’s manager about providing an alternative to Styrofoam.

Once you get into the habit of doing this, you’ll be happy that you will not be ingesting as many harmful chemicals when you eat or drink hot foods from Styrofoam.
